![]() After the meeting is over, Todo gives Ryoma his captain's haori and tells him to meet him the following morning for his tour. ![]() On hearing this, Todo volunteers to give Ryoma the tour instead. ![]() Hijikata instructs Fourth Unit Captain Matsubara Chuji to give Ryoma a tour of the Shinsengumi's headquarters, but Matsubara refuses, since he says he's opposed to an outsider being made captain. During the Captain's meeting where this promotion is announced, many of the already established captains voice their displeasure. Ryoma is promoted to Captain of the Third Unit on his first day after he impresses Vice-Commander Hijikata Toshizo with his incredible swordsmanship. Sakamoto Ryoma (using the alias of "Saito Hajime") joins the Shinsengumi while searching for his foster father's killer, whom he suspects is a Shinsengumi member. Involvement Ryu Ga Gotoku: Ishin!/Like a Dragon: Ishin!: 1867 Correspondingly, he accompanied the group when they relocated to Kyoto and became incorporated as a special police group under the name "Miburoshigumi". Todo was one of the original members of the Shinsengumi, back when they operated out of the Sheikan Dojo in Edo and were not an official organization. In his view, only after the Shogunate has eliminated the rebels who threaten the social order, then "maybe this world will calm down a little". Todo is deeply committed to the Shinsengumi's mission, saying that Japan is in a "mad era" where only violence is law and that maintaining order is paramount, even if means doing things which aren't "respectable". This callous behaviour regarding violence makes him appear uncaring and cold-hearted, but he is nonetheless deeply loyal to his mentors, Kondo and Hijikata. Todo is a very calm, collected man, who has a relaxed attitude regarding everything in life, including the many violent murders which he commits in service of the Shogunate. After he pretends to defect to the newly-formed Goryo Eji to spy on them, he discards his haori and dons the organisation's green counterpart. Underneath, he is dressed in a green hakama and a navy colored kimono, embroidered with flowers, covering a green nagajuban. Todo wears the same light-blue haori worn by other members the Shinsengumi.
